Meteora Day Trip from Thessaloniki or Halkidiki: 2026 Guide
What is Meteora?
Meteora is a group of huge sandstone pillars above the town of Kalambaka in Thessaly, crowned by Byzantine monasteries built from the 14th century onwards. Monks first lived in the caves of the rocks around the 11th–12th century; at their peak there were more than twenty monasteries, and six are still active today. Meteora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, listed for both its culture and its nature.
How long does it take to get there?
| Starting point | One way (normal traffic) | Total day with 4–5 hours at Meteora |
|---|---|---|
| Thessaloniki city or airport | About 2½ to 3 hours | About 10 hours |
| Kassandra (e.g. Sani, Kallithea, Hanioti, Pefkochori) | About 3½ hours | About 12–13 hours |
| Sithonia (e.g. Nikiti, Neos Marmaras, Sarti) | About 3½ to 4 hours | About 13–14 hours |
Since July 2026 the whole route from Thessaloniki is on motorway: west on the Egnatia Odos (A2) and then south on the new E65 to Kalambaka. Tolls are included in our price. From Halkidiki the drive adds the road from your resort to Thessaloniki.
A realistic day plan
From Thessaloniki:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 07:00 | Pickup at your hotel or address |
| Around 09:30 | Coffee stop on the way, then arrival at Meteora |
| 09:30–13:00 | Two or three monasteries, chosen by the day’s opening schedule |
| 13:00–14:00 | Lunch in a taverna in Kalambaka or Kastraki |
| 14:00–15:30 | Panoramic viewpoints and photo stops (no steps needed) |
| Around 16:00 | Departure |
| Around 19:00 | Back in Thessaloniki |
From Halkidiki the plan is the same, but pickup is around 05:30–06:00 and you are back around 20:00–21:00. If you are travelling with young children, consider staying one night in Kalambaka.
The six monasteries and how many steps
| Monastery | Steps | Weekly closing day (summer) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Meteoron (Transfiguration) | More than 300 | Tuesday | The largest and oldest, founded in the 14th century; museum and old kitchen |
| Varlaam | About 150–200 | Friday | Large courtyard, beautiful frescoes, wonderful views |
| Roussanou (St Barbara) | About 140, plus a short bridge | Wednesday | A convent on a narrow rock; one of the best photo spots |
| Holy Trinity | About 140 down and 140 up | Thursday | The most dramatic setting; seen in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only |
| St Stephen | Almost none (a short bridge) | Monday | A convent and the easiest to visit, ideal for limited mobility |
| St Nicholas Anapafsas | About 150 | Friday | Small and vertical, with frescoes by Theophanes the Cretan |
From November to March, Great Meteoron also closes on Wednesday and Thursday, and Varlaam also on Thursday. The monks can change hours without notice, so we check the schedule on the morning of your trip and plan the route around it. On most days four or five monasteries are open, and all six at weekends.
Tickets and dress code
- Entrance: €5 per person per monastery from 2026; children under 12 enter free. Pay in cash; cards are generally not accepted.
- Women: a skirt below the knee and covered shoulders. Wrap skirts are lent free at the entrance of the main monasteries, but bring your own in August.
- Men: long trousers and sleeves (no sleeveless tops).
- Shoes: closed shoes with a good grip; the rock-cut steps can be slippery.
- Photos: allowed outside and on the terraces, usually not inside the churches. Speak quietly and respect areas marked private.
The entrance tickets and lunch are not included in the price of a private tour.
Which monasteries should you choose?
- First visit, good walkers: Great Meteoron and Varlaam, which stand next to each other, plus Roussanou.
- Limited mobility or young children: St Stephen, plus the viewpoints along the road, which need no steps.
- Short on time: one large monastery and two viewpoints are enough to understand Meteora.
- Photographers: the viewpoint between Great Meteoron and Roussanou, which shows five of the six monasteries.
Private driver or bus tour?
| Private driver (GetSeat) | Organised bus tour | |

| Comfort | Air-conditioned car or minivan, only your group | Coach with many passengers |
| Price | Per vehicle, so it gets better value with 3–8 people | Per person |
Our Meteora day trip is fully private, with a driver who knows the area. The driver drops you at each monastery entrance and waits for you. Guided visits inside the monasteries are not included.
Extra stops: Kalambaka, Kastraki and Theopetra Cave
- Kalambaka: the town at the foot of the rocks, with tavernas and shops. Try local grilled meats, pies and cheeses.
- Kastraki: a smaller, prettier village right under the rocks, where the walking paths to the monasteries start.
- Theopetra Cave: a prehistoric cave about 5 km south of Kalambaka with traces of human presence going back tens of thousands of years. It is open 08:30–15:30 and closed on Tuesdays, so it fits only early in the day.
When to go
The best months are April–May and September–November, when it is cooler on the steps. In summer, start early, because the monasteries are busiest from 10:00 to 14:00. Avoid Easter weekend and 1 May, the most crowded days of the year. In winter, the days are shorter and some monasteries close more often, so plan on fewer visits.
Coming from Athens?
We also run a private Meteora and Thermopylae day trip from Athens. It is a long day of about 12 hours, with a stop at Thermopylae on the way.
