The Route: 138 km Across Chalkidiki
From the airport, the road heads east past Lake Volvi and climbs into the hills of eastern Chalkidiki. It passes the mountain villages of Arnaia and Paleochori and runs near Stagira, the birthplace of Aristotle. It then drops down to the coast at Ierissos and Nea Roda before reaching Ouranoupoli.
- Distance: 138 km
- Normal driving time: 1 h 45 min – 1 h 50 min
- Tolls: included in the GetSeat fixed price
- Road: asphalt all the way, with winding mountain sections between Arnaia and Ierissos
In summer, traffic around Ierissos and Ouranoupoli is heavier on Saturdays (hotel changeover day). Allow 15 to 20 extra minutes if you are catching a boat.
Before You Go: The Mount Athos Entry Permit (Diamonitirion)
Mount Athos is a self-governing monastic state. Every visitor needs an entry permit, the diamonitirion, issued by the Mount Athos Pilgrims’ Bureau. These are the key rules as published in 2026:
- Men only. Women may not enter Mount Athos (the “Avaton” rule). Men must be at least 18; boys under 18 need their father and special permission.
- Book months ahead. The general permit is limited to about 120 visitors a day, including only about 10 non-Orthodox visitors. Apply 3 to 6 months ahead for April to October.
- How to apply: send your full name, nationality, religion, passport number, a passport scan and your entry and exit dates to the Pilgrims’ Bureau. You also book a bed with each monastery separately.
- Cost (2025–2026): about €25 for Orthodox and €30 for non-Orthodox visitors, €10 for students with ID. Pay in cash when you collect it.
- Validity: the general permit covers up to 3 nights (4 days).
- Collect it in person at the Pilgrims’ Office in Ouranoupoli on the morning you cross, with your original passport and your confirmation email.
Pilgrims’ Office hours in Ouranoupoli: Monday–Friday 05:30–13:00 · Saturday 06:00–13:00 · Sunday 08:00–13:00. Your GetSeat driver drops you right outside the office, then takes you the last few metres to the pier.
Rules and fees can change. Always confirm with the Pilgrims’ Bureau before you travel.

Speedboats have few seats, so book ahead in summer and on Orthodox holidays.

Ferry times change by season. Check the timetable with the ferry company the day before you travel.
What Time Should Your Transfer Leave?
Aim to reach Ouranoupoli about one hour before your boat, so you have time to collect your permit and buy your ticket. With a 1 h 50 min drive, these are the pickup times we recommend from Thessaloniki Airport or a city hotel:
| Your boat | Arrive in Ouranoupoli by | Leave Thessaloniki at |
|---|---|---|
| 06:30 Agia Anna (Mon–Fri) | 05:40 (the office opens at 05:30) | About 03:45 |
| 08:45 speedboat | 07:45 | About 05:45 |
| 09:45 main ferry | 08:45 | About 06:30 |
| 11:00–11:45 speedboats | 10:00 | About 08:00 |
On Sundays the Pilgrims’ Office opens at 08:00, so plan for the 09:45 ferry or later.
Landing at SKG the same morning? Most flights land too late for the 09:45 ferry. In that case take a later speedboat, or stay a night in Ouranoupoli and cross the next morning. We can pick you up from your Ouranoupoli hotel.
Coming Back: From the Ferry to Your Flight
- The speedboat from Dafni reaches Ouranoupoli at about 13:05.
- The main ferry reaches Ouranoupoli at about 14:10.
- The weekday Agia Anna ferry returns at about 17:10.
Your driver waits for you at the pier and tracks the boat if it is late. After the 14:10 ferry you reach Thessaloniki Airport at about 16:15, so book flights departing after about 18:30 for international routes and 18:00 for domestic ones.
Book your return together with your arrival transfer, so the pickup at the pier is fixed in advance. You can change the date or time online up to 24 hours before.
Taking the KTEL Bus Instead
Public transport works, but it takes time:
- Airport to the KTEL Chalkidikis station in Pylaia: a city bus with a change, or a taxi of about 10–15 minutes.
- KTEL Chalkidikis to Ouranoupoli: about €14 per person, with several departures a day (the first around 05:30–06:00 on weekdays). The trip takes about 2.5 to 3 hours with stops in the villages.
The first morning bus reaches Ouranoupoli around 08:30, which leaves little time for the permit and the 09:45 ferry. Buses do not leave from the airport, and you cannot book a seat for your exact flight. Check the current timetable on the KTEL Chalkidikis website before you travel.
Not Crossing to Athos? Ouranoupoli for Every Visitor
Ouranoupoli is a lovely place to stay, even if you are not a pilgrim:
- Tower of Prosphorion: a 13th-century Byzantine tower on the seafront, now an exhibition space.
- Mount Athos coastal cruises: boats sail along the west coast and pass the monasteries. They keep at least 500 m from the shore, and women can join.
- Ammouliani and the Drenia islets: short boat trips to turquoise beaches.
- Hotels: Eagles Palace, Xenia Ouranoupolis, Akti Ouranoupoli Beach Resort and Akrathos Beach Hotel all receive our transfers door to door.
Families and couples can book the same fixed-price transfer to any hotel in Ouranoupoli. See all our Chalkidiki transfers.
Groups, Parishes and Pilgrimage Tours
- Sedans and minivans for up to 8 passengers, booked online in a minute.
- Minibuses of up to 18 seats for parish groups, on request.
- VIP transfers with Mercedes E-Class, V-Class or S-Class, on request.
Pilgrims usually travel with a small backpack. If you have suitcases, most Ouranoupoli hotels will store them while you are on Athos – ask your hotel when you book. For groups with different arrival times, contact us and we will coordinate every pickup.
